Hand washing reduces the risk of infection

Hand hygiene

Just about everything you touch over the course of a day is more or less covered in germs. Watch this video to better understand where bacteria are hiding.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, nearly 80% of common infectious diseases, such as the flu or cold, are spread through hand contact. These diseases are highly contagious and are quickly transmitted from one person to the other through the nose and throat. Every day, your hands come in contact with hundreds of objects that are contaminated with bacteria and viruses, which can find their way to your nose, eyes, or mouth, thus increasing your risk of becoming ill. However, there is an easy way to eliminate these microorganisms by properly washing and drying your hands. It is a proven fact that proper hand washing will eliminate 90% of germs on your hands.

The 6 steps of proper handwashing:

  • Take off all rings and wet hands under running warm water.
  • Place a small quantity of liquid soap in the palm of your hand.
  • Lather and rub hands for 20 seconds. Don’t forget to rub between your fingers, under your nails and on the back of your hands.
  • Rinse thoroughly under running water, for at least 10 seconds.
  • Dry your hands with a paper towel.
  • Once your hands are clean, avoid touching the tap; use a paper towel to turn it off.
