Tracing the history of the papermaker’s art

It was in the latter part of the thirteenth century, in Italy, that watermarks first made their appearance. Although its origins are still shadowed by time, some claim the watermark was a utilitarian device, others say that it simply designated the papermaker, like a hallmark on fine silver, or that it served as a means of artistic expression.
One fact is certain: it was not long before most of Europe's notables adopted their own watermarks, and letters preserved from that time still bear their author's coats of arms and royal crests. Like the wax seal, a watermark was an emblem of prestige as well as a means of guarding the security of personal correspondence and contracts.
Today the true watermark, like the finest paper, remains a thing of rare craftsmanship, changing little in its manufacture in over seven centuries.
Cascades Fine Papers Group, one of Canada's most respected custodians of these arts for more than 100 years, is proud to offer the benefits of prestige and professionalism that a corporate watermark can bring to your company.
We began making fine cotton-content paper and watermark in the nineteenth century. In the process, we have earned international accolades and been recognized as among the finest master papermakers. ln fact, Cascades Fine Papers Group was honoured just three years after its founding with a gold medal at the 1885 Antwerp Universal Exposition. Since that time our dedication to the highest standards and finest products has never wavered.
