The Cascades Tissue Group – Lachute plant is the first manufacturing facility in the North American paper industry to receive LEED® certification – Gold level. Certification was granted for the plant’s infrastructures, which meet strict environmental standards. LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized rating system that strives to reduce the environmental impact of the construction and operation of green buildings.
EcoLogoTM is one of North America’s most widely recognized and respected certifications of environmental leadership. Launched by the Canadian federal government in 1988, EcoLogo has grown to serve buyers and sellers of green products throughout the United States and Canada, and around the world. In fact, EcoLogo is North America’s oldest environmental standard and certification organization (and the second oldest in the world). It is the only North American standard approved by the Global Ecolabelling Network as meeting the international ISO 14024 standards for environmental labels
Green-e® is the nation’s leading independent certification for renewable energy products and purchases. The Green-e logo used on Cascades’ North River towel and tissue products is a nationally recognized symbol which helps our customers identify products that promote certified renewable energy. The commitment to using clean, emission-free renewable energy helps combat climate change through the reduction of carbon emissions. Green-e verifies Cascades’ purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and certifies the RECs to ensure they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards. All the electricity used to manufacture North River’s towel and tissue products is offset with 100% Green-e certified wind energy.
Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an international certification and labeling system dedicated to promoting responsible forest management of the world’s forests. This means that forests are evaluated to meet FSC’s strict environmental and social standards. Fibre from certified forests is then tracked all the way to the consumer through the FSC Chain of Custody system.
FSC offers two types of product certification, FSC Mix et FSC Recycled:
- FSC Mix labels identify products which are made with a combination of FSC virgin fibre, and/or recycled materials with controlled virgin fibre;
- FSC Recycled labels identify products which are made with 100% recycled fibre.
ICI ON RECYCLE! is a program created by RECYC-QUÉBEC, a Quebec Crown corporation, to officially recognize Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) establishments for their efforts to implement environmentally sound waste management.
