Research &
Development Centre
(RDC)

Loyal to its avant-garde and innovative tradition, Cascades has the largest private Canadian R&D centre in the pulp and paper sector.

A Multidisciplinary Team
The RDC provides Cascades’ operating units with the know-how of some 40 employees specializing in various areas such as product development, machine operation and wet-end chemistry. The Centre is also active in setting up projects for reducing raw material consumption as much as possible. Its constant commitment to the environment in particular comes through the development of effective, environmentally sound de-inking processes, as well as through major innovations in the bleaching of recycled and virgin pulp.

Inspired and Inspiring Scientists
A true hotbed of talent, the Research & Development Centre is often a good starting place for a brilliant career for young promising scientists. Some 20 scientists who cut their teeth at CRD now have key positions in one of Cascades’ operating units worldwide. RDC researchers also make a special point of sharing their knowledge with the entire scientific community and proudly representing Cascades. Among other things, they contribute to specialized scientific shows and reviews (Planète prise 2, Journal of Pulp and Paper Science, etc.) and take part in conferences and large-scale assemblies (Entretiens Jacques-Cartier, Fundamental and Applied Pulp & Paper Modelling Symposium, etc.).

At the heart of Cascades’ technological evolution since 1985, the RDC has been an important driver for the company’s development. In 2006 alone, the Centre’s team wrote no less than 776 scientific reports, which served to increase the competitiveness of Cascades’ plants, which will be the main beneficiaries.
